Pour与splash都表示“泼水”吗?

从字面来看, poor与splash都可以表示 “泼水”, 当实际上, 两者在内涵上差异明显:

pour表示的含义是 “泼水”, 强调 “水量大”; 此外, pour还可以表示“大量涌入” 以及“倾谈, 倾诉”的意思:

Then, without warning, it began to pour.It hit like a waterfall and made it impossible to finish the tire change.

这时,天空毫无征兆地下起了倾盆大雨,雨像瀑布一样直泻下来,我们没法换好胎。

As the Brits pour out, foreigners are flooding in.

就在英国人纷纷出国的同时,大批外国人正涌入英国。

Neither pour out all you know nor remark all you see thus to keep a quiet life.

知道的不要全部倾吐,看到的不要都加评语,这样生活可以平静。

splash表示的含义是 “溅落, 飞溅”, 强调“水量不大, 但飞溅出声音”;此外, splash也可以表示“引起轰动, 随处可见”的意思:

I heard a great cry on board the steamer and a loud splash in the water, and felt the boat sink from under me.

 

随着轮船上一阵惊呼,河上噗通一声,浪花迸溅,我不觉自己所坐的船陡的沉入了水中。

It was seven and more when Shelton returned from his walk; a few heat-drops had splashed the leaves, but the storm had not yetbroken.

Remember和memorize有什么区别?

 

Remember和memorize都可以表示 “记忆, 记住”的意思, 但两者在内涵上有较大区别:

remember所表示的含义是 “记起, 记得, 回忆起”, 强调的是 “过去的事情仍在记忆之中, 不必费劲就能想起”:

I remember very vividly as a child growing up in        England,living through the Cuban Missile Crisis.        

当我从小在英格兰长大,我对古巴导弹危机下的生活记忆犹新。

Charles Dickens is one of the greatest Victorian writers, and his name one of those to be remembered forever.

狄更斯是英国文学史上能与莎士比亚齐名的文学巨匠之一,势必名垂青史。

Marriage is the alliance of two people, one of whom never remembers birthdays and the other who never forgets.

memorize表示的含义是 “记住, 背出”, 强调的是“与意识地努力将某事的具体细节记住”:

Actors have to memorize their lines.


演员们要记住台词。

Students often have to think creatively to solve the problems- not just memorize facts.

学生们必须以创造性的思考来解决问题——而非只是记忆一些事实。

You must find as many listeners as you can.You must stand up on a platform or a stage. That's the only way to memorize longspeeches.

你必须尽可能多地找一些听众。你必须站在讲台上或舞台上。这是将长篇演讲背下来的方法。

 

Abrupt, prompt与swift都表示“迅速”吗?

 

Abrupt,prompt和swift都可以表示“迅速”这一含义, 但两者在内涵上区别较大:

abrupt表示的含义是 “迅速的, 快速的”, 强调“不期而遇, 且以一种令人不悦的方式突然出现”

The river takes an abrupt bend to the west.

这河突然向西转弯.

The abrupt and cryptic nature of the ending in Harry Potter has puzzled and annoyed many readers.

《哈利•波特》的结局的出其不意和神秘性使许多读者困惑和烦恼。

His abrupt resignation and the circumstances surrounding it seem to suggest that this is more than just a blip.

而他的突然辞职、以及这件事发生的环境似乎暗示,这不仅仅是一个突发事件。

prompt表示的含义是 “迅速的”, 强调 “做…不拖泥带水, 非常干脆”

He is prompt in paying his rent.


他付房租从不拖延.

In business, a prompt reply is imperative.

在商业上迅速的回复是必要的.

The company was prompt in its response to these accusations.

该公司对这些指责迅速做出反应.

swift虽然也指 “快速的”, 当更强调 “灵巧的, 优美的, 不费力的”, 暗指具有较高的 “稳定性, 流畅性”:

The express is as swift as an arrow.

快车似箭一般地飞驶.

The snail darter is a small fish, three inches long, swift and pretty in the water but totally uninteresting out of it.

食蜗镖鲈是一种小鱼,三英寸长,在水中行动敏捷,很好看,但一出水就一点儿也引不起人们的兴趣了。

Mr. Sarkozy called for a swift internationa response to the crisis, starting in New  York.

萨科齐总统呼吁国际社会对这次危机做出迅速反应,而起点就是纽约。
